Bedroom 'Mystery' beam - saltire engraving and burn
Please contact us if you have any insight on this beam. Click on pictures for close ups and associated notes.
The following pair of markings are found in the basement. The first three pictures show a marking scratched on the underside of a floorboard in the hallway entryway directly between the front door and the front stairs. The second three pictures show a marking on a beam directly below the entryway to the kitchen. The likely answer is tally or mill marks, however, due to the placement (entryways) and design (interlocking Vs) is there a chance they could be protective ?
"Supposedly having the power to avert evil influences or bad luck."
Attic Markings - scratched on panels around windows
See Resources to learn about apotropaic markings. The first 4 images are from the UK. The remaining images are on panels near attic windows in our house. Look for overlapping M, V, W, X, P, Y and A. Click on pictures for close ups and associated notes.
UNCATAGORIZED MARKS - RE-USED BEAMS
These markings may be carpenters marks, apotropaic marks or general wear and tear. All of these markings appear to be on re-used beams in the house. Click on pictures for close ups and associated notes.
